Switzerland’s superb comeback in victory over Serbia on Friday night has put them in a great position to qualify for the knockout phase of the World Cup. Just three – and probably only one – points separate them from the Second Round.
Standing in their way are Costa Rica, who have already been eliminated despite some decent showings in defeats to Serbia and Brazil. The problem for the Central Americans hasn’t been defensively, where they have looked pretty sound, but up front they have looked rather blunt. The Swiss are due a clean sheet, and you should definitely put some money behind it at 21/20 with Coral.
Both Switzerland and Costa Rica are experts in making a game tight, so expect no less than a cagey affair in Nizhny Novgorod on Wednesday night. Both of Costa Rica’s defeats so far have come after going in at half-time level pegging at 0-0, and I have a couple of decent bets that follow that form.
First up is the Draw-Switzerland double result that pays 16/5 with William Hill, while you can back the score to be 0-0 at half time at odds of 7/5 with Betfair. £10 on both of those has a healthy maximum return of £66.
If you don’t think Serbia will do the business and beat Brazil in the other Group E game, then you might want to think about backing the draw in this one at a very decent 23/10 with Ladbrokes. It would be a slightly risky strategy from the Swiss, but realistically you can’t see Serbia getting the three points they need to pip Switzerland to second place.
However, it’s hard to see past a Switzerland victory in their final group game. They have been solid so far, and Costa Rica represent the best opportunity to find their attacking stride ahead of the knockout phase, whilst hopefully keeping a morale/bank-balance-boosting clean sheet. The Swiss win and clean sheet double should really be snapped up at 13/8 with Coral. The Europeans aren’t huge goal scorers themselves, so another tip to tempt you with is the win plus under 2.5 goals at 23/10 with Ladbrokes.
